Hardness of Heat Treated 4140 - Metal and Metallurgy

Heat Treatment. Hardness of Heat Treated 4140 by swall. The maximum hardness that can be obtained in any steel depends on carbon content. The section size in which maximum hardness can be obtained depends on alloy content. 4140 has a nominal carbon content of .4% and this carbon content will yield a hardness of Rc 51 for a 90% martensitic

4140 heat treating - Practical Machinist

Nov 08, 2019 · Heat it till it reaches its austenizing point (no longer magnetic), dunk it in oil, draw back to a light tan. The beginning of your post says its pre-hard.. so it should already be heat treated. 4140 doesn't get super hard, I've played around with quenching it in water but at the end of them day if you need something harder you need a different material or to have it case hardened.

AISI 4140 Chrome-Molybdenum High Tensile Steel

When welding AISI 4140 steel (in any condition) only low hydrogen electrodes should be used. Follwoing welding, the maximum cooling rate that should be employed is 95°C /hr down to 95°C. This should be followed by cooling in still air. The cooling rate can be slowed by wrapping the work piece in a heat resistant blanket or burying it in sand.

4140 hardened and tempered bar can also be successfully nitrided, giving a surface hardness of up to Rc 60. Nitriding is carried out at 490 oC - 530 C, followed by slow cooling (no quench) reducing the problem of distortion. Parts can therefore be machined to near final size, leaving a grinding allowance only.
